Safety on Holiday. Don't Take it For Granted...
by: Stebee

While travelling on vacation is exciting and relaxing, you must not forget to consider safety while you are away. The rate of holiday accidents are on the increase, where one will usually encounter far more risky situations than you would in your home country.

Although most travellers worry about getting ill while they are on vacation, the statistics state that, for 20% of travellers, an accident will occur before they become ill. Accidents are usually unavoidable although there are some logical precautions that one can take to minimise the risks. Accidents are typically broken down into three categories: Personal violence, road accidents and accidental injury. Personal violence is usually defined as theft or a violent attack. It is very important to educate yourself about a citys crime rates and make a note of the places people recommend you avoid Do this before you travel!

While accidental injury is more a more common occurrence, road accidents are often the riskiest. Using common sense will go a long way to keep you and travel companions safe. Always be aware of your surroundings. Do not wear expensive clothes or jewellery when undertaking risky holiday activities such as climbing, hiking, or caving. If you require identification, take a photocopy and leave your original in the hotel where it will be safe. What could be worse than losing your passport when on holiday.

As you would in your home country, try to avoid talking to strangers and be wary of individuals approaching you. If someone offers you food or a drink, and a small part of you is suspicious then you should politely decline. You will never know what is in either of them. The worst case scenario is that they may contain drugs. If you are put in a dangerous situation remember that your life is more important than your material things. They can be replaced, you and your friends / family members cannot!
