Annapolis, Md. History and a Naval Academy
Annapolis is the capitol of Maryland. It has a population of about 36,000 people and it is not far from the major cities of Washington DC and Baltimore Md. Annapolis is home of the United States Naval Academy, which was founded in 1845 and the home of St. John's College, founded in 1696 as King William's School. It is the third college in the United States. The city sits on the Severn River, only a couple of miles from Chesapeake Bay and was founded in 1649. A good chunk of Annapolis real estate
dates back 100 or even 200 years, though there are also new condos and developments for the commuter population in the area. It is the oldest incorporated city in Maryland. Annapolis proper really had some very historic architecture. From the historical buildings, to the restaurants, to the residential areas, Annapolis is truly beautiful. Outside the historical district in general, the two leading landmarks of Annapolis are the Maryland State Capitol Building and the United States Naval Academy.
The beautiful Maryland State House is the oldest state capitol still in continuous legislative use. Construction of the State House was completed in 1779. The Maryland State House was the first peacetime capitol of the United States and is the only state house ever to have served as the nation's capitol.

The other great attraction in Annapolis is the US Naval Academy, where about 1,200 students learn to be tomorrows leaders of the Navy. Another related site is the Annapolis Maritime Museum.

The Naval Academy was founded in 1845 by the Secretary of the Navy, George Bancroft, in what is now historic Annapolis, MD. The history of the Academy goes back to the era of sailing ships and steam ships to the present day. Now these young men and women are learning to serve in aircraft carriers, nuclear submarines and in an era where satellite guide missile fired at targets at any place on the globe. The Naval Academy gives young men and women the up-to-date academic and professional training needed to be effective naval officers. The United States Naval Academy strives to accomplish its mission to develop midshipmen morally, mentally, and physically.

Students at the US Naval Academy are called 'midshipmen,' not cadets. There are a lot of traditions and a lot of specific elements about how they dress, how they act, and everything about them. It's better to ask your tour guide what its all about. You could get very interesting replies as well if you ask these students about strategic affairs and military strategy.

Other noteworthy tourist sites in Annapolis are the religious houses of worship. Saint Anne's Episcopal Church, officially established in 1692 played a part in the early days of instituting religious freedoms. Saint John's College which was chartered in 1784 is also an historic site. The residences are on display of William Paca, Charles Carroll of Carrollton, Thomas Stone, and Samuel Chase, who are four of the College's founders who also signed the Declaration of Independence. Saint Mary's Roman Catholic Church is a gothic church built in 1860.
